The story of the hand painted "pub sign" cover for the rather splendid Viva Lewes Magazine.
The guys at Viva Lewes wanted a "pub sign" cover for the April 2012 pub themed issue. I have painted many pub signs over the years (follow this link to see some of my past pub signs:http://www.keithpettit.co.uk/index.php/featured-projects/traditional-pub-signs ), so I was happy to help out.
The first thing discussed was the theme of the pictorial. Usually you're not having to worry overly about that, the Red Lion or the Kings Head makes it pretty obvious where you're going with the project. Alex and Katie were keen that it wasn't to obvious or too chocolate box. As is usual the idea seemed to arrive in my head unprompted "how about a scene form the Battle of Lewes?" I asked, Alex liked the idea as there is a gathering interest in the up coming anniversary celebrations. After deciding to turn the date and edition number into a Mock Brewery Logo I was left to come up with some sketches.
The final design features Simon de Monfort in the midst of the battle above Lewes. With an admittedly modern representation of Lewes castle. I decided to do the illustration in signwriters enamels as this would give the most traditional Pub Sign feel to the painting.
The photos below show the signs development from initial sketch through to the finished sign. The sign is available to buy, so if you'd be interesting in owning it please give me a call on 01825 841000 and make me an offer!
