Much Ado Arches

Beautiful wildwood arches creating a magical room within the gardens of Much Ado Bookshop in Alfriston. The sculpture was installed to coincide with the Charleston Festival.

Cate and Nash (the wonderful owners of Much Ado Books) asked me to come up with an installation to coincide with the Charleston Festival. The arches are the result of this request, creating a magical room within the garden.  Titania’s bower perhaps or sleeping beauties forest. Definitely a place to find faeries and other magical folk!
The arches that create the garden room are made from the heartwood of oak. When an oak tree falls, if it is left untouched with the crown intact the limbs that are suspended from the ground, will slowly loose their "sap wood" as time and nature does it's worst. What is left is the sinewy remains of the heartwood, looking more like stag antlers than wood. When these relics of past storms are gathered together they create a pattern or rhythm that I am drawn to over and over again.
